Why Do We Need Resilience and Determination in Recovery

Recovery from addictions or alcoholism requires unwavering strength and endurance. A rule is: “If you are not changed, you are the same. If you are the same, you can expect the same!” A considerable part of recovery is “change,” just that changing by itself creates a ridiculous amount of discomfort.

Discomfort in Recovery

Many in recovery are, in an illogical way, comfortable with how they now are despite any level of destruction the way they are has led to.  There is a conscious knowledge that change is necessary, but complete mental and physical resistance to these changes must be wrestled with. That ongoing struggle requires a high level of determination and endurance through trials.

Recovery also involves healing damaged relationships and challenges of your own making that must be repaired.  For many, a critical connection that has to be improved is the one with themselves regarding Self-esteem. Restoring all these relationships and all the challenges of your own making requires the ability to keep going in the right direction no matter how uncomfortable o painful it is.

Another key reason is simply resisting the urges for whatever the addiction is. It will require more than willpower alone to overcome addiction; however, it is a crucial factor and a tough fight.  There may even be times when willpower is all you have, and those times especially need a determined battle for recovery and life.  Making it through that struggle requires resilience and determination beyond what you may typically have had in previous situations.

An overarching need for resilience and determination is holding on to “hope.” Without hope, the recovery journey literally becomes hopeless. Hope gives the entire journey a feeling of having a point and something that you are aiming for.  Addictions tend to fight to keep a person feeling hopeless and stuck.  Hope is hard to hold on to and requires a lot of effort and maintenance to hold on to.
